More people are set to become German citizens as the government’s new citizenship reforms came into effect on Thursday, June 27, 2024.

The liberalization means Germany will, for the first time, allow multiple citizenship on principle — rather than as an exception for EU and Swiss nationals and those who can prove “special hardships.”

“Finally, our law is doing justice to our diverse society,” Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in a recent statement. “Finally, we recognize the life stories and achievements of many people in our country who immigrated a long time ago and have helped our country to move forward. The message is very clear: You belong to Germany!”

Around 14% of the population in Germany do not have German citizenship. According to government statistics, 168,545 people were naturalized in Germany in 2022 — just 3.1% of foreign nationals who have been living in Germany for at least 10 years, though the number has been rising in recent years.

That number is set to increase substantially in the coming year: State governments across Germany have already reported a rise in applications.

The new rules will give new rights to non-Germans who have been living in Germany for some time. The center-left government, made up of Social Democrats (SPD), Greens and the neoliberal Free Democrats (FDP), hopes to increase the number of naturalizations and thus create incentives for faster integration.

The opposition parties, the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is partly made up of right-wing extremists, and the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) claim that the German passport will become cheapened.

Here are the main changes:

Multiple nationalities
Applicants to become naturalized citizens will no longer have to give up their previous nationality to become German.

Accelerated procedure
People will be able to apply for German citizenship after lawfully living in the country for five years, rather than the previous eight.

Special achievements rewarded
Naturalization will be possible after just three years for something the German Interior Ministry calls “special achievements in integration.” Such achievements might include not only learning German, but also excellence at school or in professional life, engaging in civic life or running for political office.

Easier access to citizenship for children
All children born in Germany to foreign parents will in future acquire German citizenship if at least one parent has been living in Germany lawfully for more than five years and has permanent residency.

The controversial “option regulation” — which forced the children of foreign parents to choose a nationality at 18 — is now abolished.

Special recognition for ‘guest worker’ generation
The so-called guest worker generation — mainly Turkish people who moved to West Germany in the 1960s to work — will no longer have to take a naturalization test. They simply have to prove oral language skills to gain German citizenship. Many are expected to use this opportunity.

The same also applies for foreign workers who moved to the former East Germany to work under a similar program.

Earning a living
Though the new rules apply to everyone in principle, applicants for naturalization will still have to prove they can earn their own living (though again, people from the guest worker generation can still apply regardless).

Commitment to democracy and anti-racism
A commitment to the democratic order set out in the German constitution has always been a requirement for anyone applying for naturalization. This now specifically excludes anyone found to have committed antisemitic, racist or other inhumane acts. Those who reject equal rights for men and women or live in polygamous marriages are also not eligible for a German passport.

Over 150 universities in Germany have selected Indian students, and we’re thrilled to share that 13,000 applicants have already received their certificates.

In a recent statement, German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackerman expressed great satisfaction with Indian students. He mentioned that German universities value Indian applicants highly and find their experience with them extremely positive. He even noted that Indian students often find job opportunities within six weeks of graduating.

Ambassador Ackerman emphasized Germany’s desire for Indian students to not just study, but also stay and contribute to the workforce after graduation. He sees this as beneficial for both Germany and the students.

Germany remains a top choice for students worldwide, offering top-notch education at affordable costs. With zero tuition fees, low living expenses, and ample part-time job opportunities, it’s an attractive destination for international students.

The German EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte) is a German residence permit for work, issued to non-EU nationals who have a university education and will work in skilled positions in Germany.

To be eligible for a Blue Card, your salary must be higher than the national average.

Who Can Apply For an EU Blue Card for Germany?

You can apply for a German Blue Card if you meet the following criteria:

Academic and professional qualifications

You must have a higher education degree, either German or from a university that is recognized in Germany.

Certain professions, like health, law, teaching, and engineering, are regulated, so in addition to presenting your degree, you must also have it recognized. The recognition authorities differ based on your profession; you can see them on the “Recognition in Germany” portal.

A job offer appropriate for your qualifications

You must have a concrete job offer from a German employer. When you apply for the Blue Card, you have to submit a work contract, which states the position and the salary you are being offered.

Remember, you must work for an employer; you cannot receive a German Blue Card as self-employed.

Salary should be 1.5 times the national average

The salary you will receive must be at least one-and-a-half times the national salary average in Germany. In 2023, the applicant has to earn a minimum gross salary (before tax) of €43,800.

If you apply for a job in a field in shortage (science, medicine, engineering, IT, architecture, etc), you may receive a Blue Card if your salary is at least €39,682.80/year. To get an EU Blue Card with a lower salary, you need approval from the Federal Employment Agency.

If you are not sure your job position qualifies you for an EU Blue Card, you can reach out to professionals, such as the immigration law experts at Schlun & Elseven Rechtsanwälte. They are well-informed about all matters related to German Blue Cards.

Eligible Professions for German EU Blue Card

Some of the professions that are most in-demand in Germany are:

Architects and interior designers

Engineers

Information and communication technologies specialists

Mathematicians

Health professionals

Scientists

Scientific engineers

Urban and traffic planning specialists

Management

The employment fields that make you eligible for a German Blue Card are those that require a university degree. If you are highly qualified in your field, then you are eligible for a German Blue Card.

Where Can I Look for Work in Germany?

You can look for work in Germany through job portals online. The German Ministry of Education and Research lists the following websites as great points of reference for job hunters in qualified professions:

Euraxess.de

Academics.com

EURES – ec.europa.eu/eures

Alumniportal-deutschland.org

Obboerse.arbeitsagentur.de

Bund.de

Make-it-in-germany.com

Germany EU Blue Card Application Process

You can only get an EU Blue Card from the Foreigner’s Office in Germany. So, after you find a job in Germany, you have to approach the German embassy in your country to obtain an entry visa*. Once you are in Germany, you can get your Blue Card. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Set up a visa appointment:

The candidate has to contact the German embassy or consulate in your country to set up a visa appointment. If there is no German embassy in your country, you may have to travel to a neighboring country for the application.

Collect the required documents:

The German embassy will provide a list of documents required for a German work visa application. This includes your work contract, academic qualifications, travel health insurance, etc.

Submit the visa application:

On the date of your appointment, you have to submit the visa documents and pay a fee. You may also be asked to enter an interview.

This is just an entry visa for employment. You still have to apply for the Blue Card after you get to Germany.

Wait to hear a decision:

It can take one to three months to hear a decision on your visa application.

Travel to Germany:

If your visa application is successful, you will receive a visa, allowing you to enter Germany.

There, you have to register your residence, obtain German health insurance, and open a bank account.

Obtain an EU Blue Card at the German Foreigner’s Authority:

Once you have settled your residence, banking, and health insurance, you can submit the application for an EU Blue Card at the Ausländerbehörde (German Foreigner’s Authority).

* Citizens from Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America do not need to apply for an entry visa for employment at the German embassy. They can apply for an EU Blue Card directly at the German Foreigner’s Authority.

Applying for the Blue Card If You Are Already in Germany

If you are already in Germany, and you are offered a position that makes you eligible for a Blue Card, you can apply at the local Ausländerbehörde (German Foreigner’s Authority). You must start the process at least six weeks before your current residence permit expires.

Getting Expert Help With the German Blue Card Application

You can also hire experts to help with your EU Blue Card application. Working with immigration lawyers, like the immigration lawyer, will save you a lot of time, effort, and anxiety.

They can offer consultation, help complete your application, and answer any questions you may come to during the entire process. For people unused to dealing with German bureaucracy, this can be extremely beneficial.

Germany Blue Card Requirements

The documents required for a Blue Card application in Germany are:

Your valid passport.

Recent 35mm x 45mm biometric picture.

Your employment contract.

Application form for a residence permit.

Declaration on the employment relationship. This is required if you need further approval by the Federal Employment Agency.

Your residence registration in Germany. When you enter Germany, you have to register your address within the first two weeks. Submit the certificate of registration as proof that you primarily live in Germany.

Your university or college degree.

If needed: Recognition of your degree by the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB).

Proof of health insurance.

If you have public health insurance, submit your electronic health card along with a confirmation of health insurance.

If you have private insurance, submit the certificate from the insurance company along with proof you have paid your contributions.

Occupation practice permit. For occupations that require an occupational license, such as medicine or law.

Germany EU Blue Card Processing Time

It takes between five to six weeks to hear back a decision from the Ausländerbehörde regarding your German Blue Card application. The Foreigner’s Authority will work in cooperation with the German Federal Employment Agency to issue your residence and work permit.

What’s the Fee for the German Blue Card?

The fee for a German Blue Card is €110. However, it may range in cost between €100 to €140 in different German constituent states.

Can I Bring My Family to Germany With a Blue Card?

Yes, you can bring your immediate family members to Germany with you on a Blue Card. This includes your spouse and dependent children. Your family members can join you with a German family reunion visa and can enjoy the same healthcare, education, and social benefits as you: they are allowed to pursue an education as well as work in any occupation.

Can I Work in the EU With a German Blue Card?

No, you cannot use the German Blue Card to work somewhere else in Europe. You will have to apply for the EU Blue Card for that other country, provided that you find a job and meet the criteria.

You can apply for an EU Blue Card in another country after you have already worked for 18 months in Germany.

Validity of the German EU Blue Card

The German Blue Card is issued for the duration of your work contract plus three months. The maximum duration it can be issued for is four years. If your contract ends before you are eligible for settlement, you have three months to look for another job and continue to live in Germany.

After 33 months of residence, you can apply for settlement in Germany, which means you do not have to renew your Blue Card, but can live in Germany indefinitely.

If you can speak German proficiently, you can apply for settlement after only 21 months of residence.

Do I Lose My German Blue Card If I Change or Lose My Job?

No, you do not automatically lose your German Blue Card if you lose or change your job.

If you lose your job, you have a three-month period during which you can look for another qualified position. You must then get a German Blue Card according to your new employment.

If you change your job, you have to notify the Foreigner’s Authority, so they can adjust your Blue Card accordingly.

After you become a settled resident, you no longer have to notify the Foreigner’s Authority when you change employers or if you lose your job.

No, It’s Not!!! But still Don’t worry if you’re a just beginner. Many study programs at German universities are offered in English, too.

A LOT OF EDUCATION FOR LITTLE MONEY

Even though education in Germany is among the best in the world, it costs less than in many other countries. In most German states, you do not have to pay any tuition fees at all. You only need to pay a small charge for the semester contribution: This payment varies between higher education institutes and is between 100 and 350 euros. At many higher education institutions, it also includes a semester ticket that allows you to use public transport in the region. If you are not able to get admission to Public Universities, still you have a chance to study in Germany at Private Universities with the much lower cost of tuition fees.

A SHORTCUT ON YOUR CAREER PATH

Being able to study and gain work experience at the same time is one of the advantages of the German educational system. At universities of applied sciences, theory and practice go hand-in-hand. Some offer dual (work/study) programs, too. They enable you to acquire extensive theoretical knowledge and practical experience at the same time. Some models even offer you the opportunity to gain a bachelor’s degree and vocational qualifications.

YOUR FUTURE CAREER PROSPECTS

Practically-oriented study programs give you the opportunity to get to know the world of work sooner. You don’t just discover lots about your future career, but you also take your first vocational steps. Where do you go from there? Maybe you want to stay in Germany? After graduating, you can apply for a residence permit, which allows you to stay in Germany for 18 months to find a job. Germany offers plenty of career opportunities. Companies, here, are increasingly on the lookout for new recruits to help build a strong economic future.

13% of people living in Germany COME FROM ABROAD.

83M. people live in Germany -More than in any other European Union state.

Whether you are in the city or the country, you can travel freely and feel secure. Internationally, Germany is a byword for stability. The same goes for life here. Citizens exercise power over the government via Germany’s parliamentary democracy. Today people trust in fair elections and the rule of law.

After years of division between East and West, the German Democratic Republic (DDR) and the Federal Republic of Germany (BRD) were unified in October 1990. Since then, the entire country has been called the Federal Republic of Germany.

Germany’s turbulent history is seared deep in people’s memories. That’s why they appreciate security nowadays.
In Germany, both public and private universities offer diverse opportunities for higher education, each with its own distinct characteristics and advantages. Public universities, funded by the government, often emphasize research and typically have a broader range of academic programs. They are known for their strong reputation, rigorous standards, and affordable tuition fees, particularly for EU citizens and international students. On the other hand, private universities, while generally more expensive, often provide smaller class sizes, specialized programs, and greater flexibility in curriculum and teaching methods. They may also offer additional services and amenities, catering to specific academic or professional interests. In this comparison, we’ll explore the key differences between public and private universities in Germany to help you make an informed decision about your higher education journey.

What criteria do public and private universities in Germany consider for admission?

Public universities usually have higher admission requirements than private universities. Public universities in Germany typically maintain stricter admission standards compared to private universities. This is primarily because public universities are open to a broader pool of applicants, including international students. The high demand for public university education results in fierce competition for limited spots, as these institutions remain highly sought-after. Consequently, public universities often receive a significant number of applications, surpassing the available capacity for admission. This competitive environment necessitates stringent admission prerequisites to ensure that only the most qualified candidates are accepted into their programs.

Is it easier to get into a private university in Germany?

To some extent, yes, it is. If you have a GPA that’s below average and can manage to afford the tuition fees at a private German university, then opting for a private university might be the right choice for you. While private universities in Germany may have higher tuition fees compared to public universities, they are still more affordable than studying in countries like the US, UK, or Canada.

What are the tuition fees for studying at public or private universities in Germany?

Germany’s public universities are funded by the state governments, which means that tuition fees are relatively low compared to other countries. In most cases, students only have to pay a small semester fee, which covers the costs of things like student services and public transportation. While private universities are commonly owned by a company or investors. Unlike their public counterparts, private universities in Germany charge tuition fees from students. Typically, you should expect to pay between €8,000 and €15,000 per year for a Bachelor’s program and between €9,000 and €20,000 per year for a Master’s. In some cases, there might be small differences between the amounts paid by students from the EU/EEA and students from outside the EU/EEA.

What is the range of programs available at public and private universities in Germany?

Another important distinction between public and private universities in Germany is the variety of programs or courses available. According to DAAD, there are 422 courses offered in Germany, with 90% of them being offered at public universities. This indicates a broader range of programs available at public universities compared to the private education sector. However, it doesn’t mean that private universities don’t offer a good variety of programs. It’s simply that public universities in Germany are typically larger in size.

What are the deadlines for applying to public or private universities in Germany?

The two most important intakes in the German higher education calendar are:

Winter semester: July 15th

Summer semester: January 15th

While these deadlines generally apply to both public and private universities in Germany, private universities tend to offer more flexibility. To ensure you don’t miss out, it’s advisable to verify the deadlines directly with the university.

If you’re planning to attend a public university, make sure to submit your applications at least eight weeks prior of time.

Which semester should you start your studies in?

The winter semester in Germany typically begins in October and concludes in March. It is generally the preferred choice due to the higher availability of courses and larger intake of students. Applying for the winter semester increases your chances of admission, as most courses at public universities only accept applications for this semester. It’s important to verify this before applying. On the other hand, the summer semester in Germany runs from April to September. If your desired course is available in the summer semester, don’t hesitate to apply!

Should I study at a public or private university in Germany?

Choosing between a public and private university in Germany hinges on what you prioritize in your educational journey. Factors like your academic performance, language proficiency, and career aspirations should guide your decision-making process. Private universities may provide smaller class sizes, specialized programs, and greater flexibility in curriculum and teaching methods, albeit at a little higher cost. Consider factors like program availability, tuition fees, campus size, and teaching approach to make an informed decision that aligns with your educational and career aspirations.

The general advice is to apply to a university that offers your dream course, is located in a city you want to live in, and has the highest return on your investment (time and money). No matter what type of university you choose, know that Germany’s education system is one of the best in Europe and around the world. Studying in Germany opens up great opportunities for your future career.

Are private universities in Germany good?

Even though private universities in Germany do not rank as high as public universities, it doesn’t mean that they’re not good. The pros of pursuing your higher education in Germany are usually higher than in universities in most countries.

Students at private and public universities in Germany are able to enjoy modern facilities, world-class programs, and, not to mention, a high employability rate for graduates.

Germany has proved to be a heaven in terms of education as well as job opportunities for Indian students. Here are some of the reasons for studying in Germany for Indian students.

The world has become a global village. Modern-day connectivity has made it all the simpler for people to explore other cultures and taste success in a superior work environment.

It has a population of around 8 crores and is similar to the Rajasthan state area. However the GDP of Germany is at USD 3.85 trillion. Not only this, they have at present around 12,00,000 open job positions.

For international students, Germany has become a desirable place of education and employment. According to the figures given by Germany Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), at least 330,000 international students are enrolled at German universities. Out of this number, Indian students form the third largest group of international students in Germany.

EASY WORK PERMIT

To attract talented workers around the world, Germany and the EU have introduced the EU blue card which is similar to a Permanent Resident permit for especially skilled employees. With this, one can live, work, and settle in any of 26 European countries.

As the fifth largest economy in the world, Germany can offer international students with specialist skills plenty of work opportunities after graduation. To make this process smoother, various German universities like PFH University, Technical University Ilmenau, Jacobs University, KIT – Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Technical University of Munich and many other universities offer programs to study work and settle in major fields.

German universities stress a practice-oriented approach to complement academic teaching, which adds to its popularity among global learners, who seek outcome-oriented learning.

To ensure students gain theoretical and practical knowledge throughout the course, various German universities partner with companies. This ensures that students graduate with polished skills and theoretical know-how, which helps them become highly employable and ready to solve real-world problems with innovative techniques.

Therefore, India, as the fastest-growing economy, enjoys a fantastic reputation in the world today and Germany has been a pillar of academia for ages. The amalgamation of Indian intellect with German technology could prove to be an excellent team.

This emergence of collaboration can prove to be a stepping stone for both countries to benefit mutually.

PROMISING LOCATION FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS

Germany stands as a promising location for overseas education in terms of offering quality of education at an affordable price for international students, low living costs, and availability of scholarships. Also, it offers a practice-oriented education and its government has made arrangements to facilitate part-time work for students.
